Point guard Ronnie Johnson receives release from UH

Junior point guard Ronnie Johnson has asked for and received his release from the University of Houston men’s basketball program, coach Kelvin Sampson said Monday.

“We appreciate Ronnie and his hard work in our program during the last two seasons and wish him the best in the future,” Sampson said.

Johnson, a transfer from Purdue, spent two seasons at UH. He sat out a season and averaged 9.4 points and 2.9 assists while playing all but one game this past season.

“I want to thank my teammates in Houston for the last two years,” Johnson said in a statement released by the school. “I learned a lot and developed my game under Coach Sampson and his coaches, but I believe it will be best for my career to be a senior leader at another school.”

Johnson will graduate with his bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership supervision in May.
