Two men arrested after firing shots at HPD officers

Two men were arrested Friday after firing shots at Houston police officers overnight in north Houston.

Victor Sanchez, 29, and Jose Portillo, 20, are both charged with aggravated assault on a police officer after shooting at officers around 1:35 a.m. at 7075 North Freeway, according to a news release from the Houston Police Department.

Three police officers were stationed in a parking lot at North Freeway when they saw a blue pick-up truck driving westbound in the 300 block of West Rittenhouse. The officers then witnessed several gunshots and rounds buzzing over their heads.

They attempted to stop the vehicle, but Portillo, who was driving the car, refused to stop.  HPD officers began following the car to the 600 block of Granville and initiated a traffic stop in the driveway on the street.

The two men were taken into custody. Police also noticed a pistol on the front dashboard of the car, as well as a mini AK-47 between the front passenger seat and center console. Three fired cartridges were also found by officers on West Rittenhouse Street, where the shooting originally occurred.

Both suspects admitted to their roles in the shooting after being interviewed.
