UH lineman Alex Cooper invited to Texans prospect day

University of Houston offensive tackle Alex Cooper has been invited to the Texans’ local prospect day Saturday, according to a league source not authorized to speak publicly.

The Bellaire native and Second Baptist graduate ran the 40-yard dash in 5.23 seconds at the Cougars’ Pro Day workout.

The 6-4, 305-pounder bench pressed 225 pounds 23 times and had an 8-8 broad jump and a 28-inch vertical leap.

He was a second-team all-conference selection.

A team captain, Cooper started every game at three different positions: left tackle, right tackle and right guard and graded out at 81 percent as he played 1,046 snaps on offense and allowed just one sack. He averaged 4.8 knockdown blocks per game as Houston won the Peach Bowl and averaged 40.4 points per game.

He started every game at right tackle as a junior.

Cooper caught five passes for 54 yards and a touchdown as a tight end in high school and also had 13 sacks and two fumble recoveries on defense.

Cooper was an all-district selection who chose Houston over Baylor, Kansas State, Rice and Southern Methodist.
